What Actually Happens During an Acupuncture Appointment?

Last week, I introduced Clare as the newest member of the Reform Osteopaths team.

Since then, I've had a number of conversations with patients who all seem to ask the same questions...

"Does it hurt?"

"How many needles are there?"

"Will I be left lying there on my own?"

"What actually happens during an acupuncture appointment?"

If you've ever wondered the same thing, I thought I'd walk you through exactly what to expect.

It Starts With A Conversation

Just like your first appointment with me, treatment doesn't begin with the needles.

It begins with listening.

Clare will spend time getting to know you, understanding your symptoms, your medical history, your lifestyle and what you're hoping to achieve from treatment.

She'll explain whether acupuncture is likely to be appropriate for you, answer any questions you have and make sure you feel completely comfortable before any treatment begins.

What Do The Needles Feel Like?

This is probably the question Clare gets asked most often.

The needles used for acupuncture are incredibly fine—much finer than those used for injections or blood tests.

Many people barely feel them being inserted.

Others describe a slight tingling, warmth, heaviness or a dull ache around the area being treated.

Everyone experiences it a little differently, but treatment should never be something you simply have to "put up with."

If anything feels uncomfortable, Clare will simply adjust the treatment.

What Happens During Treatment?

Once the needles have been placed, you'll simply have time to relax.

Some patients enjoy a chat.

Others close their eyes.

Some even drift off to sleep!

The needles are usually left in place for a short period while you rest in a calm, quiet environment before they're gently removed.

Many people leave feeling deeply relaxed, while others simply notice they feel a little lighter and less tense.

What Should I Wear?

Nothing special.

Loose, comfortable clothing is ideal.

Depending on the area being treated, Clare will explain exactly what she needs access to and will always make sure your comfort and privacy are respected.

Is Acupuncture Right For Everyone?

Just like osteopathy, acupuncture isn't the right answer for every problem.

That's why every appointment begins with a thorough consultation.

Sometimes acupuncture may be the most appropriate option.

Sometimes another approach may be better.

Sometimes a combination of treatments works best.

The important thing is finding the treatment that's right for you.

Appointments & Availability

Clare will begin seeing patients at Reform Osteopaths from Friday 18th September.

Initially, she'll be in clinic every Friday from 1:00pm until 6:00pm, with plans to expand her availability as demand grows.

Appointments are:

  • Initial Consultation & Treatment (90 minutes) – £90

  • Follow-up Appointment (60 minutes) – £60

Still Curious?

If you're not quite ready to book, or you're simply wondering whether acupuncture is the right option for you, Clare is offering a free 15-minute discovery call before she starts at the clinic.

It's a relaxed, no-obligation opportunity to ask questions, discuss your symptoms and find out whether acupuncture may be the right option for you.

You can arrange a discovery call:

Whether you're considering booking an appointment or simply want to learn a little more about acupuncture, Clare would be delighted to hear from you.

Next week, we'll be back to one of our regular educational emails before sharing more about some of the conditions acupuncture may be able to help with as Clare's first clinic approaches.

As always, thank you for your continued support.
