Do Osteopaths Only Treat Backs?
When most people hear the word Osteopath, they immediately think of back pain.
It's understandable.
Back pain is one of the most common reasons people visit us.
But it's only a small part of what we do.
One mission I have set myself throughout my career is to educate the wider community that we do so much more than just treating backs. Osteopathy, through treatment, exercise & lifestyle advice, has the ability to treat or at least ease the majority of musculoskeletal issues.
At Reform Osteopaths, we assess and treat the whole body. That means helping people with everything from headaches and jaw pain to foot injuries and sporting problems.
Because your body doesn't work in isolation—and neither do we.
It's All Connected
Your muscles, joints, ligaments and nerves all work together.
When one area isn't moving well, another often has to work harder to compensate.
That's why someone with shoulder pain may actually have a problem starting in their upper back.
Or why an old ankle injury can eventually contribute to knee, hip or even back pain.
Treating only the painful area doesn't always solve the problem.
Sometimes you have to look further afield.
So, What Do Osteopaths Treat?
Every patient is different, but we regularly help people with:
Back pain
Neck pain
Shoulder pain
Headaches
Jaw pain (TMJ)
Hip pain
Knee pain
Foot and ankle problems
Sports injuries
Muscle strains
Joint stiffness
Postural aches and pains
Sometimes the answer is osteopathy.
Sometimes it's a combination of treatment, advice and rehabilitation.
Sometimes it's simply understanding why the pain started in the first place.
Feet Matter More Than People Think
One area that's often overlooked is the foot and ankle.
In fact, it's a particular area of interest for me.
Your feet are your connection to the ground. Every step you take sends forces through your ankles, knees, hips and spine.
If something isn't working as it should lower down, it's surprising how often the effects are felt somewhere completely different.
That's one of the reasons we always assess movement as a whole rather than focusing on a single painful joint.
Our Aim Isn't Just Pain Relief
Of course, we want you to feel better.
But our aim is also to understand why the problem developed.
That means taking the time to listen, assess how you move and identify the factors that may be contributing to your symptoms.
Whether your pain is in your back, shoulder, foot or somewhere else entirely, our goal is to help you move with confidence again.
The Bottom Line
Osteopathy is about much more than backs.
It's about understanding how your body works as one connected system.
Sometimes the painful area is the problem.
Sometimes it's simply the area asking for help.
Finding the difference is where good assessment makes all the difference.
"We don't just treat where it hurts. We look for the reason it hurts."
If you're unsure whether osteopathy could help with your symptoms, we'd be happy to have a chat and point you in the right direction.
